Why Do My Teeth Hurt When I Eat Sugar?

Posted on 7/20/2016 by Dr. Jay
A patient's teeth suffering from gum disease.Sometimes patients feel sensitivity in their teeth when eating sugar. It may seem unusual for your teeth to be sensitive so specifically, but there are many patients who suffer from sweet sensitivity. There are a few different reasons that you may be experiencing sweet sensitivity.

An Indication of Gum Disease

Discomfort when eating sugary foods is not a normal occurrence. For some patients, this may be due to receding gums, which is an indication of a larger issue, known as gum disease.

When your gums begin to recede or pull back, it can expose sensitive areas of your teeth, and they may be reacting with pain. Seeking timely treatment is important, gum disease can be reversed and prevented if caught early, but if allowed to progress, later stages of gum disease can be highly problematic.

Spots on your Teeth where Dentin is Exposed

For some patients, they may feel sensitivity on spots where the hard layer of enamel has thinned, exposing the under hard layer of dentin. With the dentin exposed, some patients report sensitivity to extreme cold or very hot food and some are sensitive to sweets. Your dentist can help build up your enamel with fluoride.

Cavities or Decay

If there are cavities or decay, this is another way that sweets can find a way to come in contact with dentin layers beneath the enamel layer. We can remove the decay and fill in the cavity, protecting your dentin and saving you discomfort.

Bruxism is a condition when patients grind or clench their teeth while they sleep. This condition can be damaging to your teeth because it can cause cracks, fractures, and breakage.

The problems may be miniscule, making the patient unaware of tiny hairline fractures. If sugar is allowed to fill in these cracks, then you may feel pain as the underlayer of dentin is exposed to the sugar.
